To help ensure rituals are successfully implemented into your team’s work and personal lives, we recommend the following tips:
Why - Explain why the ritual has been chosen and how completing the ritual may make
a difference to team member’s well-being and work. You can ask Quan for evidence-based benefits and references to promote the ritual to your team.
What - Explain exactly what the ritual is to your team using the steps/expected outcomes
(these are outlined on the Quan platform) and share any suggested videos to help
explain the details to your team.
How - Explain how they will complete the ritual individually or as a team. This needs
to be as easy as possible for them to incorporate into their work or personal lives.
Team members also need to know how the success of the ritual will be measured and
how they will be kept accountable for completing the ritual. This could include how they
will demonstrate ritual completion through sharing photos with the team or when they will
be asked for ritual feedback. For rituals that are reliant on the individual completing it on
their own it may help to encourage team members to form a ritual buddy so they are kept
accountable on a daily/weekly basis.
Embed - make sure the ritual is a regular agenda item for your regular team meetings.
Ask what they did last week, and what they plan to do this week for the ritual, to ensure
its embedded as a behavior change. Send out calendar invites to the team so the time to
complete the ritual is blocked out in their agenda, and inadvertently, permission and
space is given for the team to make it a priority . Reminder emails or messages can also
prompt or nudge your team towards ritual completion. For some rituals it will help to
create a way for your team to share their own challenges and success implementing the
ritual. E.g. you could create a ritual board or slack channel for your team to share photos
or feedback.
It’s important you ‘walk the talk’ by completing the ritual and sharing how you
incorporated the ritual into your day. It will also motivate the team if you can share any
benefits you experienced to your wellbeing or work. Sharing your own successes or
challenges with ritual implementation demonstrates authenticity and builds trust in your
team encouraging them to share their own experiences.
Evaluate/Reflect - To help create sustainable behavior change, your team needs to see
some benefit from the ritual. It's important to encourage your team to reflect on their own
ritual implementation by introducing a form of ritual evaluation or a check in after two to
four weeks. Many rituals have provided a form of evaluation by asking team members to
rate their energy, mood and productivity on a scale of 1 to 5 or questions.
Providing feedback has multiple benefits as it helps your team reflect on some of the
benefits they have seen from completing the ritual that may motivate them to continue.
Seeking feedback also helps to gain buy-in from your team and supports them to learn
from others about how to successfully implement the ritual. This will also help the team
to connect and support each other in the future.
Refine - Seeking feedback from the team also helps you to refine the ritual so it is more
relevant and effective for your team. Make sure you collate any qualitative or quantitative
feedback from your team and use this to refine the ritual. For example, if you are
implementing the ritual ‘Deskercise’ and the chosen activity makes your team feel
uncomfortable then ask the team for their ideas on an activity that is more inclusive and
enjoyable for them.
It’s important to show your team you have taken their feedback on board and refined the
ritual accordingly to help elicit future feedback and ensure you maximise the potential
benefits of ritual implementation.
